As the title suggests, this is something simple with something complicated. The advice is simple, the coin move that I’ve put with it…not so much. Thankfully you don’t have to learn the coin move to get the benefit.
For all that it’s simple, I do still think it’s good advice. The benefits of taking a slow, deep breath are actually more than you might think. A slow deep breath – or a few slow deep breaths, help your body shift from the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight), to the parasympathetic (rest and digest). Your heartrate slows down, and your blood pressure drops.
There are also hormonal changes.. Cortisol is your stress hormone, and a slow deep breath helps to lower this, resulting in reduced tension and lower stress levels.
It improves oxygenation to the brain, which increases mental clarity, and even synchronises your brain wave to your heart rhythm, resulting in positive effects on your ability to concentrate calmly.
Just remember to always breathe out again. And then in again…
