Many people come to therapy carrying memories that continue to affect their emotions, thoughts, and daily life. EMDR is a gentle, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process these distressing experiences, so they lose their emotional intensity. The goal is to help you feel calmer, more in control, and able to move forward.
Unprocessed Experience
Unprocessed experiences can affect your mind and body in many ways. You might notice:
• Flashbacks or intrusive memories
• Strong emotional reactions to reminders of past events
• Anxiety, panic, or irritability
• Difficulty relaxing or feeling safe
• Chronic tension or physical discomfort
• A sense of being “on edge” for no clear reason
If this resonates, EMDR may help you reduce distress and regain a sense of calm and control.
How EMDR Works
During EMDR, you focus on a significant memories, thoughts and feelings while engaging in gentle bilateral stimulation – such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory cues. This helps the brain reprocess the memory, integrating it in a healthier, less distressing way.
You don’t need to relive every detail of the memory. EMDR works by supporting your brain’s natural healing processes while keeping you grounded and in control. Many clients notice reduced distress and increased emotional resilience after just a few sessions.
What EMDR Can Help With
EMDR is effective for a wide range of issues, including:
• Trauma and post-traumatic stress
• Anxiety and panic
• Phobias and fears
• Grief and loss
• Medical or procedural anxiety
• Chronic pain or stress-related symptoms
• Low self-esteem or negative self-beliefs
A Supportive, Holistic Approach
At Chameleon Hypnosis, EMDR is often integrated with hypnotherapy and psychotherapy to provide a holistic approach that works with both the conscious and unconscious mind. Sessions are carefully paced to ensure safety, comfort, and a sense of control, helping you reconnect with confidence and calm.
Online or In-Person Sessions
Appointments are available via Zoom across Australia, or in-person in South Australia at Integrative Health Solutions in Belair.
How long does it take?
An initial EMDR session runs for approximately 90 minutes and is most effective when integrated into a larger treatment plan of 3-4 one hour sessions, comprising a mix of further EMDR and standard hypnotherapy techniques. This allows us the necessary time to properly explore and manage your issue. Although some people do experience instantaneous resolution, it is more common to make incremental progress as you learn new strategies, and your brain starts to create new neural pathways. Additionally, at least one of the follow up sessions will focus on teaching self-hypnosis, to empower you with the skills you need to be more independent.
