Living with IBS can be frustrating, unpredictable, and exhausting. The bloating, pain, urgency, or food anxiety can affect every part of your life – from work and travel to social situations and daily routines.
I offer a clinically supported, mind-body approach to IBS that helps calm the digestive system, reduce symptoms, and restore your confidence and comfort.
IBS: A Gut-Brain Condition
Irritable Bowel Syndrome isn’t “just in your head,” but the brain and gut are deeply connected. Stress, anxiety, and past experiences can all influence how your gut behaves. This is why traditional treatments like diet changes or medication often fall short—they don’t address the role of the nervous system.
Hypnotherapy directly targets the gut-brain connection, helping to soothe and retrain the unconscious patterns that may be contributing to your symptoms.
What Symptoms Can Hypnotherapy Help With?
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Bloating and gas
- Diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating patterns
- Food-related anxiety
- Unpredictable bowel habits
- Emotional stress tied to gut symptoms
Whether your IBS is triggered by food, stress, or seems to flare up without warning, hypnotherapy can help reduce both the physical and emotional impact.
Evidence-Based Support for IBS
Gut-directed hypnotherapy is one of the most researched and effective complementary treatments for IBS. Clinical studies have shown it can:
- Reduce symptom severity
- Improve gut motility and sensitivity
- Lower stress and anxiety levels
- Improve quality of life
- Provide long-term relief even after sessions end
As both a clinical hypnotherapist and experienced healthcare professional, I offer a safe, evidence-based approach that supports your medical care. IBS is often best managed with a multi-disciplinary approach, where hypnosis forms a part, but not the whole, of your treatment.
How It Works
Using guided relaxation and targeted suggestions, I help calm the digestive system and rewire the gut’s response to stress and triggers. Sessions are gentle and deeply relaxing, and may include:
- Gut-directed imagery and metaphors
- Breathing and body awareness
- Reframing negative associations with food or symptoms
- Building trust and confidence in your body again
How long does it take?
I normally recommend a treatment plan of around 4-6 one-hour sessions, spread over around 8-12 weeks. This allows us the necessary time to utilise multiple approaches to help manage your IBS. Although some people do experience instantaneous relief, it is more common to make incremental progress as your body begins to adjust and heal. Additionally, at least one session will focus on teaching self-hypnosis, to empower you with the skills you need to manage your IBS (and any flare ups or other problems you might face) independently.
Online or In-Person Sessions
Appointments are available via Zoom across Australia, or in-person in South Australia at Integrative Health Solutions in Belair.
